Fred McDaniel Jr.: Oct. 23, 1932 – March 6, 2017

“The Diesel Man” has retired. Fred McDaniel Jr., 84, of Oak Harbor passed away at Kindred Hospital, Seattle, on Monday evening, March 6, after an extended illness. Fred was born in Reynolds, Ga., to Fred and Edna Lucile McDaniel on Oct. 23, 1932.

As an eager young man, ready to serve his country, he convinced his mother to approve his entry into the U.S. Navy at a young age. Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1949. He served his nation with great pride, superior professionalism and distinction.

He served in the Korean and Vietnam theaters of operation and received numerous unit and personal awards, including the Combat Distinguished Service Ribbon during his second tour in Vietnam. He attained the rank of Chief Equipment Operator and served in the proud “Fighting SeaBee” community.

Fred retired from active-duty service in 1976, culminating 28 years of service in the U.S. Navy. After retirement, Fred enrolled at Skagit Valley College to hone his skills and ultimately becoming known as “The Diesel Man.” He operated his own diesel repair business for almost 40 years.

Fred loved all things sports, from fishing and crabbing to golf, bowling and football. In accordance with his passion for sports, he was also a championship trap shooter. He was also a tireless advocate for veterans.

Fred served as Post Commander at VFW Post 7392 for five terms, earning the prized All American White Hat during two of those terms. He also served as District 15’s commander, giving him the opportunity to travel. And in Fred McDaniel fashion, he traveled fast!! In doing so, anyone lucky enough to be Fred’s passenger received a memorable, white-knuckle ride.

Fred was also an active member of the American Legion. After partially retiring, Fred enjoyed his pets, TV sports, “John Wayne” or any western movie.

He was proceeded in death by his parents Fred Sr. and Edna Lucile McDaniel, wife Sheila McDaniel, sister Eloise Brown and step-daughter Jana Ellen Lee.

Fred is survived by his wife Joanne Lee McDaniel, son Eddie McDaniel and wife Becky, daughter Julianne Smallwood and husband Gary, son John McDaniel and wife Kim, step-son William B. Lee and wife Perling, nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Since Fred’s children have traveled great distances to support him during his illness, there will be a celebration of life ceremony at a later date, with the location and date to be announced.
