Edward ‘Ned’ Miles Potter: Oct. 16, 1921-Sept. 6, 2016

Ned Potter passed away peaceably in his sleep and went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sept. 6, 2016 at an assisted living facility in West Linn, Ore.

He was born on Oct. 16, 1921 in Seaside, Ore. to Miles and Stephanie Potter. His parents moved around within Oregon and later divorced and each eventually remarried again.

Ned and his brother Bill grew up in Palo Alto with their mother where he went to Union High School. He and his brother spent summers at their father’s ranch on the Deschutes River in what is now Wickiup Reservoir.

Ned graduated from Oregon State College and was an active member in Sigma Chi. Ned’s eyesight was poor enough to keep him from the military during WWII, so he worked for the Department of Agriculture inspecting ships in port. Ned married Marguerite Gahr and they had two children, Mike and Shirley. While his son and daughter were growing up he became a Boy Scout Scoutmaster and leader. He went to the National Jamboree in Colorado springs and helped with the planning and organizing of the food supplies for several thousand Boy Scouts. He was a proud father.

He took his son and daughter camping and fishing all over Oregon and also his Boy Scout Troops went on many outdoor trips. He taught them all about surviving outside in rain or snow which never dampened their spirits. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, which was the highest council-level honor a Boy Scout leader could receive.

Ned later married Beverly Esterly and they lived in Oak Harbor for many years and were active in the First United Methodist Church and the Whidbey Golf and Country Club. Ned is survived by his two children Mike Potter of Central Point, Ore. and Shirley Hoem of Wilsonville, Ore.; grandchildren Jonathan Clay, Matthew Clay, Melanie Potter, David Potter and Caitlin Thompson.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 26, 2016 at the Hubbard Chapel in Hubbard, Ore. For those who wish to attend, please use this link: http://bit.ly/EdwardPotterMemorial
