Charles Douglas Hayes: July 2, 1958 – Sept. 11, 2018

Charles Douglas Hayes died on Sept. 11 in Oak Harbor. He was 60 years old.

He is survived by two children, Charles Dustin (Heather) Hayes and Catherine Nichole (David) Werner; four grandchildren, Marie Hayes, Charlie Hayes, Emily Hayes, and Ezekiel Werner; three stepchildren, Jason Ironmoccasin, Jennifer (James) Ironmoccasin Gillard, and Katelyn Ironmoccasin; and one sister, Debra Grobmyer. His wife, Robin Hayes, parents, Charles Rudolph Hayes and Iris (Chambliss) Hayes, and sister Holly Hayes preceded him in death.

Charlie was a veteran of the Gulf War, and during his time in the Navy, he earned several medals, including the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Navy Expeditionary Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He grew up in New Madrid, Mo., and spent his early adulthood working on riverboats on the Mississippi. He joined the Navy in 1983 and retired as a chief petty officer after 20 years of service to his country. In his retirement, he loved fishing, camping, hunting and spending time in the outdoors. He also loved telling tall tales and catching up with his family and military brethren.

Services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. at Delisle Funeral Home in Portageville, Mo. Charlie will be interred in a family plot at Evergreen Cemetery in New Madrid. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (http://www.nmcrs.org/).
