Aileen Mae Kunz: November 13, 1926-April 16, 2018

Aileen Mae Kunz, age 91, of Canton, Mich. passed away at Regency at Bluffs Park Rehabilitation Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Aileen was the beloved wife of the late Karl W. Kunz (d. 2000) and loving mother to Susan Kunz, of Newman Lake, Wash. (Frank Brou) and Karl Kunz, Jr. (Laurie), of Belleville, Mich.

Aileen was proud grandmother to Alex Brou, Joshua Kunz, Kaleb Kunz and Ryan Brou.

Aileen is survived by her brothers, Thomas Strom, John Hughes and Kenneth Strom (Jo Celle), and sisters Karin Rose (Bob), Mary Hughes and Judy Byles (Frank).

Aileen was preceded in death by her husband Karl W. Kunz, her sister Louise Nalder, her father, Howard Hughes, her mother, Etta Mae Anderson, and her adoptive father, Louis Strom.

Aileen was born Nov. 13, 1926 in Hoquiam, Wash. to Etta Mae and Howard Hughes. She was raised in Hoquiam and graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1945.

In 1949, Aileen married Karl W. Kunz a Navy seaman. In the first years of marriage, Karl and Aileen enjoyed many hours sailing and fishing off Whidbey Island in the sailboat that Karl built. Aileen raised her family primarily in Oak Harbor where she stayed involved in her community by playing clarinet in the Oak Harbor Community Band and serving as Sunday School superintendent.

Karl and Aileen were also stationed at Barbers Point, Hawaii and Pensacola, Fla.

Aileen loved gardening, caring for houseplants, knitting sweaters for her family for which she won many awards. While living in Hawaii, Aileen studied cake decorating. Later in life Aileen enjoyed working on her computer. Her family and friends looked forward to receiving custom-made greeting cards for birthdays and holidays. In retirement, Karl and Aileen moved to Sun City West, Ariz., where they enjoyed the warmer weather. Aileen lived on her own in Arizona after Karl passed away. She moved to Belleville, Mich. shortly after her 80th birthday to be closer to family. Aileen lived independently until her passing.
