Woman found beneath Deception Pass bridge in stable condition

The 74-year-old Oak Harbor woman found on the rocks underneath the Deception Pass Bridge Monday sustained multiple fractures but her injuries don’t appear to be life threatening.

The woman was listed in stable condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Island County Sheriff Mark Brown said Friday, referring to an update he received the day before.

The woman’s family has asked that the sheriff’s department not publicly release her name, said Brown, adding he would be temporarily honoring that request.

“It is a sensitive family issue,” he said. “She is alive and being cared for.”

Brown said he still doesn’t know how the woman ended up below the 180-foot tall bridge but felt comfortable ruling out any possibility of foul play.

Island County Coroner Robert Bishop said evidence indicates that the woman might have been laying on the rocks out of view of bridge walkers for as long as 24 hours.

Bishop was summoned to the scene after the woman was spotted and, at first, presumed dead. He said the incident is something of the likes he has never seen in his 22 years as a coroner.

“It’s a fascinating story of survival,” Brown said. “We don’t know how or where she fell from.

“There are a lot of unknowns.”

Officials won’t say if they suspect a suicide attempt or an accidental fall.

However, Jack Hartt, park manager at Deception Pass State Park, said, on average, about three people jump to their deaths from the bridge each year. He said there’s already been three people who have jumped from the bridge this year.

Although there are very rare cases of survival, a person surviving after landing directly on rocks from that distance is not possible, Bishop said.

It would take an intermediate target such as a tree to slow a person down, he said.

There is a hiking trail in the area above where the woman was found that leads to Goose Rock, but a fall from that area is still a great distance.
