Woman charged after leading odd car chase

A woman who drove away from a traffic stop and led deputies on a high-speed chase in April is facing a felony charge, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Coupeville resident Sarah J, Rodriguey, 34, in Island County Superior Court May 24 with attempting to elude.

The odd series of events began in the early morning hours of April 3 when a deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office saw a driver, later identified as Rodriguey, pull her car over on State Highway 20 on North Whidbey and then start walking around it.

She eventually waved at the deputy and drove away.

About 20 minutes later, the deputy saw Rodriguey driving near Deception Pass Bridge.

He followed her as she drove slowly, braking frequently and steering to the right as if she was going to stop.

The deputy wrote that he decided to pull her over because of the peculiar driving.

The deputy contacted Rodriguey, who told him that she was “just making sure you were OK.” Rodriguey handed him her driver’s license and registration but then asked for her ID back, saying she had a different one to give him.

After the deputy asked to see the other ID, Rodriguey suddenly drove away, spinning her tires as she headed south on Highway 20, according to the deputy’s report.

Two deputies followed her as she traveled on Ducken, Monkey Hill and Troxell roads. They reached speeds as high as 85 mph in a 50 mph zone.

Rodriguey turned her lights off as she eluded the deputies, the report states.

The deputies lost her during the chase but later arrested her after responding to a report of a suspicious person later that morning.
