Volunteers need to help veterans

Training offered by South Whidbey group

Whidbey Veterans Resource Center, located in Langley, is looking for volunteers to help assist in connecting veterans and their families to services and programs.

The organization, which is entirely volunteer is offering training 10-11:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 17 and 10-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the American Legion at 14096 State Highway 525 just east of Bayview.

The time involved can vary from just a few hours a year to a few hours a month to almost half-time.

According to the nonprofit group, there are more than 3,000 veterans on South Whidbey, many of whom are in need of assistance in some form. Volunteers do not need to know about the military or veteran services to help.

Some activities involve direct contact with veterans, but many do not.

The group has in place several local programs for veterans and their families including equestrian, sailing, creative writing, veterans’ support group, women’s veteran support group, and other activities. All veterans and their families are welcome.
