Three-vehicle crash snarls bridge traffic

An accident involving a large box truck and two cars snarled traffic on the bridge Wednesday afternoon.

Trooper Mark Francis with the Washington State Patrol reported that 79-year-old James Bain of Oak Harbor was driving south on Highway 20 in a Chevrolet Impala and drove into the oncoming lane, striking a Jenco truck driven by Norman Umbaugh, 51, of Blaine.

The impact caused the truck to lose control and veer into the southbound lane, striking a Volkswagen Vetta driven by 29-year-old Stephen Weatherford of Oak Harbor.

Umbaugh suffered a minor head injury and a possible rib injury. Weatherford suffered a shoulder injury. Both were transported to Island Hospital in Anacortes, according to Francis.

Neither Bain nor his passenger were injured. Bain was cited for driving over the centerline.

The crash was reported at 12:15 p.m. The bridge was limited to alternating, one-lane traffic until the vehicles were cleared at about 2 p.m., the trooper said.
