Suspect charged with impersonating businessman on Craigslist

A man is facing criminal charges for allegedly impersonating an Oak Harbor businessman on Craigslist and posting racist and lewd comments in his name, court documents state.

Prosecutors charged 46-year-old Jeremy Souza in Island County Superior Court last month with six counts of criminal impersonation in the first degree.

The businessman reported to police last year that someone was impersonating him and his wife on Craigslist, an online service with classified and personal ads.

The man suspected Souza, who was upset with him over a business agreement, according to the police report.

Some of the messages requested sexual relations with strangers and gave out the victim’s phone number. The businessman said he received “disgusting” text messages, including photos, as a result.

Other messages inaccurately purported that the businessman was racist. Some said he was part of a brotherhood of white people and held rallies; others were fake job ads saying that only white people should apply.

The officer obtained a search warrant for Google to read Souza’s emails and found automated messages from Craigslist about posts that were flagged.

In one of them, Souza used the businessman’s name, said he needed the “touch of a man” and asked interested men to call him or just approach him at his business, the officer wrote.
