The results were tight, but it looks like a proposed property-tax levy for Sno-Isle Libraries passed in Tuesday’s special election.

The measure was on the ballot in Snohomish and Island counties. The levy proposal actually lost among Snohomish County, but voters in Island County voted “yes” by a wide margin and put it over the top.

The latest tally has it passing by 991 votes, or less than one percent. A total of 60,234 people voted in favor of the measure and 59,243 votes against it. That’s 50.41 percent to 49.59 percent.

Nearly 62 percent of Island County voters cast ballots in favor of the levy increase.

The ballot measure, if passed, would add 9 cents to the current library property tax levy. If it does pass, the levy rate in 2019 would be 47 cents per $1,000 of assessed value.

If the measure doesn’t pass, the existing levy would continue. Library officials, however, said the revenue wouldn’t meet the rising costs of maintaining services and the budget would be reduced starting in 2019.
