Skagit Valley College Whidbey Island Campus to give out honors

Skagit Valley College Whid-bey Island Campus Honors Reception is set for 5:30 p.m. June 6 at Oak Harbor Elks Club.

This year’s Skagit Valley College Foundation Scholarships totaled over $600,000 — a record-setting amount — and will be awarded to Skagit Valley College students district wide.

Among the many life-changing scholarships are these highlights:

Rotary Club of North Whidbey Island Sunrise club will award eight scholarships to Whidbey Island students. Thanks to the group’s ongoing commitment to supporting higher education at SVC, local students will have the opportunity to pursue their educational goals and make their dream of a college education a reality, a press release states.

Whidbey Health Auxiliary Committee exemplifies the spirit of community ties and giving back, the college reported. This year, they will award two scholarships to deserving part-time or full-time Whidbey students who are pursuing a rewarding career in the healthcare profession.

According to a press release from Skagit Valley College, the community college is making a difference throughout the community by opening the doors to higher education for everyone who seeks a better future.

Skagit Valley College has created a diverse learning environment where all are welcomed and valued, the college said. It’s a place where students of all ages, from many backgrounds and perspectives, and with various skill levels and life experiences, receive the support and care they need to succeed in the classroom and in life.

“We want each of them to know, ‘You belong here,’” the college said in a press release.

Many students begin their educational path at Skagit Valley College with financial challenges, which can be a barrier to their success. However, the college said, there are many who live in the community who embrace civic-minded leadership, collaboration, service, and engagement.

“In that spirit, we connect with many individuals and organizations who give back to Skagit Valley College — and the greater community — by supporting the college’s mission of providing access to higher education,” the college said.
