Police investigating report that Oak Harbor student was accosted

Oak Harbor police are investigating a report that a student was accosted after getting off a school bus last night, according to Police Capt. Mike Bailey.

The intermediate-school-age student reported that a male dressed in dark clothing grabbed him while he was walking through a wooded area on Heller Street at about 4 p.m. Bailey said the student didn’t know the assailant and didn’t know if he was an adult or a juvenile.

Detectives are investigating the case and don’t have additional information at this point, he said. The police chief immediately called the school superintendent lats night and the district sent out an alert to parents.

“While the investigation is still ongoing it serves as a good reminder to discuss with our children the necessary safety precautions when walking to and from school,” the alert states. “These reminders include to stay near the streets and in well lit areas whenever possible and to avoid walking through wooded or secluded areas, especially alone.”
