Olympian coming to town

United States Olympic speed skater Anna Ringsred will help the Boys and Girls Club of Coupeville kick off its summer camp with Track and Field Day Monday, June 16.

Track and Field Day is one of 700 events taking place June 14-30 around the country to honor the Olympic Movement and Olympic Day, which is June 23.

Olympic Day, which began in 1948, is celebrated by 160 countries to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games and focus on Olympic values and ideals.

Unit director of the Coupeville Boys and Girls Club, Jamie Scharich, said the organization decided to register for Olympic Day to take advantage of the United States Olympic Committee’s program that assists those hosting Olympic Day activities.

Among the many resources the USOC provides are event materials, agendas and suggested activities.

The USOC also encourages Olympic athletes to take part, providing a list of events for them to consider.

Ringsred, who grew up in Duluth, Minn., and trains out of Calgary, will be in Washington in June and decided to be part of the Coupeville event.

Ringsred was a member of 2014 Winter Olympic team, finishing 26th in the long track 3,000 meters after placing second in the U.S. trials.

She is a three-time World Championship qualifier with a top finish of fifth in the 2007 team pursuit.

“We are very excited to have her at our Olympic Day,” Scharich said.

Coupeville Mayor Nancy Conard will also participate, helping with either the opening or closing ceremonies, Scharich said.

Track and Field Day is open to all youngsters, not just those from Coupeville, Scharich said.

The list of activities has not been finalized, but will include water events and those similar to elementary school field days, Scharich said.

Track and Field Day is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mickey Clark Field, the Coupeville High School football, soccer and track facility.
