Old bank knocked down for parking

Big machines, but no wrecking ball or dynamite, are being used to reduce the former Whidbey Island Bank on Pioneer Way in Oak Harbor to rubble.

The windmill in Windjammer Park was also taken down.

The city purchased the former bank building and an adjacent parking lot four years ago to provide parking for the sewage treatment plant that’s being built there. The 35,000-square-foot building and property cost $2.6 million.

The building once housed JC Penney and later InterWest Bank. Most recently the Daily Grind coffee shop was in the building and it was used for offices for the companies involved in the construction of the sewage treatment plant.

City officials initially had plans for the building. They talked about the possibility of moving City Hall or the library there.

But officials later decided to raze the old bank because of the high cost of a seismic retrofit and other work that would be necessary to continue use of the building.

The windmill was removed because dry rot was discovered, and city officials said they believe it was cost prohibitive to repair the existing structure.
