Officer seeks owner of homeless pigs

Island County’s animal control officer found the owner of a couple of porkers that were at large in Central Whidbey.

Two loose pigs showed up in the Welcher Road neighborhood on Jan. 2. A resident of the area lured the pigs into a fenced area and contained them, according to Animal Control Officer Carol Barnes.

The wayward farm animals spawned 911 reports and a long thread of comments on the Facebook page for Whidbey Island Pets. People speculated that the piggies had been dumped in the area by the owner.

The pigs, which appear to be Berkshire crosses, were placed in “protective custody” at the home of the woman who corralled them by luring them into a fenced area, Barnes said. Nonprofit group Whidbey Island Farm Animal Assistance Program provided them with food.

Barnes put out a public request for information about where the piggies came from and she eventually identified the owner this week.

Barnes didn’t cite the owner but instead educated him about proper animal husbandry and advised him of a state law regarding animals at large.
