If you’re planning to leave the house on Saturday, keep an eye out for zombies.
They’re coming to a street near you.
The Monster Mash Street Bash is a new event aimed at bringing more business to merchants on Midway Boulevard, according to Kathy Reed, Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce executive director.
The fun is from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.
“This will lead up to the zombie crawl, or hobble, walk — whatever they need to do,” Reed said. “So folks can get their zombie on.”
Central headquarters for the event is at Trader’s Village, but activities will take place all along Midway Boulevard.
The zombie crawl is at 6 p.m. at Whidbey Playhouse, but people can arrive at 4 p.m. to take zombie dance lessons, such as the Monster Mash and Thriller, and have their makeup done, said Allenda Jenkins, playhouse board member. Shirts will also be available for people to wear.
“WAIF donated 100 shirts we’re going to zombify,” Jenkins said.
For those interested, Jenkins said RSVPs are appreciated, but not required to participate.
Once the crawl starts, one lane of traffic will be closed off so the zombies can safely make their way down the boulevard, Reed said.
Police will escort the procession, and three lanes of traffic will still be open.
Many different businesses are offering a variety of activities for participants as the walkers make their way down the street.
ClickMusic will have dancing for the Monster Mash participants, said ClickMusic owner Avi Rostov.
It gives people the opportunity to dance and hangout.
Rostove said the venue is large so people can be active and spend time together as a community.
They started decorating on Tuesday afternoon but won’t make it too scary because a lot of young kids come into the store.
Oak Bowl and Mario’s Pizza will offer glow bowling, and Tee to Green will also have zombie golf.
A haunted graveyard will be set up at the Edward Jones office.
The graveyard will be in the front parking lot with Halloween decorations, lights and creepy music.
The set-up will begin on Saturday, said Jeffery Pleet, Edward Jones financial advisor.
“For our first time participating we wanted to make it cute and fun for the kids,” Pleet said.
Pleet said he was looking forward to being one of the stops along the walk and would be handing out candy to walking dead.
Besides the zombie walk, a jack-’OH’-lantern contest will also take place.
Other children’s activities will be held there, as well as showings of old horror movies, Reed said.
