A 26-year-old Oak Harbor man sustained serious injuries from rolling his pickup truck after dragging a deputy and then leading him on a car chase, according to Island County Sheriff Mark Brown.

The deputy responded to a report of a disorderly man at a parking lot on Goldie Road just outside Oak Harbor at 8:52 p.m. Thursday.

The caller reported that the man, later identified as Fernando Aguilar Jr., appeared to be under the influence drugs and was pushing and threatening to kill people, Brown said.

Aguilar was seated in his 2000 Ford Ranger pickup and involved in a heated argument with people outside the vehicle when the deputy arrived.

The deputy opened the door and reached into the truck to take it out of gear, but Aguilar put it in reverse. The deputy was caught by the open door and dragged for a short time.

The deputy was able to get loose and roll away after Aguilar put the truck into drive and sped off, according to Brown.

The deputy sustained minor injuries.

Aguilar then sped southward on Goldie Road with “extreme recklessness” as the deputy followed, Brown said. Aguilar lost control of his truck on Goldie Road and ended up in a field, where the truck got stuck. Aguilar managed to free it and continued south.

He drove through a red light at the intersection with State Highway 20 and turned north on the highway; he also went through red lights at the intersections with Northeast Sixteenth Street and Ault Field Road, the sheriff said.

Aguilar again lost control about a mile north of Oak Harbor, near the intersection with Sleeper Road. The pickup crossed into the southbound lanes, came back into the northbound lane, left the roadway, struck a tree and landed on its top, according to an accident memo from the Washington State Patrol.

Aguilar sustained serious injuries and was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. He was listed in critical condition in intensive care as of Friday afternoon.

His truck was totaled.

The State Patrol is investigating the case. The report states that it’s currently unknown whether Aguilar was under the influence of drugs or alcohol; possible charges are pending.

Brown said the incident was incredibly dangerous to the public.

“You have someone who is erratically driving through town after dragging a deputy and threatening to kill other people,” he said. “It was fortunate nobody else was injured.”
