Navy man accused of assaulting two children

A Navy man with a history of child abuse was recently charged with additional child assault charges, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Zjehiah Herrera in Island County Superior Court March 11 with two counts of assault of a child in the third degree.

Herrera is accused of assaulting a 6-year-old and a 7-year-old child with a belt in December.

Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigated after an elementary teacher in Oak Harbor noticed a student was walking slowly. When questioned, the child said his father had “whooped” him. The school nurse identified significant bruising on the child and the child’s sibling.

The children said Herrera hit them with a belt and back scratcher for losing a coat and forgetting homework, the NCIS report states.

Herrera declined to be interviewed.

The children’s mother allegedly told the children their father was in jail and it was their fault, the report states.

The NCIS reported that CPS had two previous reports alleging that Herrera abused his children and other people’s children.
