Washington State Parks will hold a public meeting in Coupeville on Monday to discuss potential private business development at Joseph Whidbey State Park.

The meeting will take place from 6-8 p.m., Monday, March 21 at the Coupeville Recreation Hall.

Joseph Whidbey State Park is one of 10 state park sites under consideration for allowing privately-financed recreational facilities. State Parks refers to this as Recreation Business Activities, or RBAs.

Such consideration comes after the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission adopted a strategy two years ago to expand the use of parks land holdings to try to generate more revenue for state parks.

Under the plan, 60 of the 206 total acres at Joseph Whidbey State Park could be used for possible development that could include up to 50 cabins, a lodge-type structure with food services and new-day use facilities as well as dry boat storage.

Joseph Whidbey is the only state park in Island County under consideration at this time for RBAs.

Another nearby state park being targeted for such use is Fort Flagler State Park.

Its public meeting is from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at the park’s Theater Building.

Public input at these workshops will be reviewed by the State Parks Commission for discussion at its May 18-19 meeting in Moses Lake.

Coupeville Rec Hall is at 901 N.W. Alexander St.
