Man accused of vandalizing Garage of Blessings

A man who said he wanted to be held in jail overnight is accused of vandalizing the Garage of Blessings thrift store in Oak Harbor March 27, according to court documents.

At a March 28 hearing, Island County Superior Court Judge Alan Hancock found probable cause existed to believe Louis R. Yaw, 36, committed the crimes of malicious mischief and resisting arrest.

Hancock set bail at $5,000 and ordered that Yaw be interviewed by a mental health professional for the possible commitment to a mental health facility.

Staff at the charity told police that Yaw had been inside eating when he became agitated and started acting strangely, including talking to people who weren’t there. He was escorted outside, but then he allegedly broke the door and pushed over a 600-pound “tree trunk welcome sign” into the building, causing damage, according to the police report.

Yaw was screaming and trying to break the windows, scaring the staff inside.

Yaw told an officer who responded that he wanted to be held in jail overnight because it was cold. He said he would continue committing crimes if he was arrested and released.

Even though he wanted to go to jail, Yaw allegedly resisted arrest. It took three officers to get him into handcuffs and into the police car.

The officer wrote that police had several contacts with Yaw in recent weeks and that his behavior appeared to be escalating. He had been screaming “I will kill you” at a transient camp, the report indicates.

Yaw’s criminal history included eight felonies and eight gross misdemeanors, according to court documents.
