Man accused of assault with knife

A 36-year-old man is accused of strangling a woman and putting a knife to her throat during a Nov. 10 incident in Freeland, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Jason M. Mangum in Island County Superior Court Nov. 14 with assault in the second degree while armed with a deadly weapon.

It was charged as a domestic violence crime.

Four deputies responded to a 911 report that a woman was attacked by a man with a knife. At the home, the woman told deputies that Mangum threw her against a wall multiple times, strangled her multiple times and held a knife against her throat, the police report states. She said he also threatened to kill himself.

The report indicated that a protection order was in place barring Mangum from contacting the woman.

A 10-month-old child was present during the assault but was not injured, the report indicates. The victim was treated for injuries to her forehead, cheek, back and neck.

If convicted of the charge, Mangum could face from three to nine months in jail under the standard sentencing range.
