Loot, gun recovered from stolen minvan

An estimated $30,000 worth of stolen silver coins, $10,000 worth of stolen jewelry and a stolen handgun were recovered from a stolen vehicle on South Whidbey Jan. 31, according to the Island County Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy with the sheriff’s office was driving through the Ken’s Korner parking lot when he saw a Honda Odyssey that had been stolen during a recent burglary.

The deputy approached the vehicle and saw a man, later identified as 25-year-old Kody Schwiger, slumped over the drivers seat, the deputy’s report stated.

After backup arrived, the deputy knocked on the window and woke Schwiger.

A woman in the back, later identified as Destiny Barber, 28, started screaming.

The deputies arrested Schwiger and Barber, who were identified in court papers as transients.

The deputies searched the vehicle and found many items, including a pistol, stolen in the recent burglary, the report states.

On Feb. 1, a judge in Island County Superior Court found probable cause to believe Kody Schwiger committed the crimes of possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of stolen property in the third degree.

The judge set his bail at $20,000.

Barber was released from custody after a judge ruled that probable cause did not exist to hold her.
