Lions car show no-go for this year

For the first time in 34 years, North Whidbey Lions Club won’t be putting on a car show this summer.

Terry Beatty, chairman of the car show committee, said the Lions couldn’t find a suitable alternative to Windjammer Park.

The City of Oak Harbor’s large, waterside park is closed for the summer as workers do restoration and improvement work. It was torn up during construction of the sewage treatment plant.

“We just decided to bite the bullet and put it off a year,” Beatty said.

The Lions looked at Fort Nugent Park, but decided it was too far off the beaten path, he said.

The popular car show is normally held on the second Saturday of August.

It draws more than 200 cars from all over the region. Going to the car show is a summertime tradition for many families.

Beatty said club officials concluded that they will be able to survive a year without the big fundraiser.

The car show started in the parking lot of Oak Harbor Auto Parts and grew from there, Beatty said.
