Incumbent leads hold strong with additional ballot counts

Additional counts continue to keep incumbent candidates in state and county races affecting Whidbey Island ahead of challengers this week.

As of Friday, state Sen. Barbara Bailey had increased her lead over challenger Angie Homola with 55.9 percent of the vote in combined Island, Skagit and Snohomish counties.

U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen continued his lead over Marc Hennemann with 64.8 percent and two state representatives continue their leads. Norma Smith had 72.5 percent over Michael Scott and Dave Hayes was over Doris Brevoort with 58.3 percent.

Island County commissioner incumbents also continued their leads. Helen Price Johnson was leading over challenger Gary Wray with 55.45 percent of the vote and Jill Johnson was winning with 60.83 percent.

Island County voters were voting pretty consistently with the rest of Washington state. County voters agreed with approving several state initiatives which are passing, including:

n Initiative 735, which concerns proposed amendment to federal constitution;

n Initiative 1433, which concerns labor standards, passing with 58 percent;

n Initiative 1491, which concerns court-issued extreme risk protection orders temporarily preventing access to firearms, passing with 70 percent;

n Initiative 1501, which concerns penalties for taking advantage of seniors and vulnerable individuals, passing with 71 percent.

Voters went along with state voters in rejecting Initiative 1464, which concerns campaign finance laws and lobbyists; and Initiative 732, which concerns taxes.

More than 49 percent of county voters preferred Hillary Clinton for president. and about 43 percent of the county voted for Donald Trump.
