Highway crews paving on both ends of Whidbey

30-mile road project nearing completion

Work continues on both ends of Whidbey Island’s main highways as the $15 million state project continues repaving nearly 30 miles of road. Although it looks to be nearly complete, finishing work could go on through the summer.

Since April, crews have improved intersections, sidewalks and gutted, grated and replaced large swaths of road, starting at State Highway 525 at Bob Galbreath Road in Clinton to Holbrook Road on State Highway 20 north of Coupeville.

“Crews are working long hours to get this project done as quickly as possible. Work has been going smoothly and right now we’re on schedule to finish the project this fall, as expected,” said Andrea Petrich, spokeswoman with Washington State Department of Transportation.

Crews will continue to do overnight work on Sunday through Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., she said. Traffic could be delayed up to 30 minutes in sections north of Coupeville and around Clinton.

For ferry commuters, allowing an extra 30 minutes for travel time is recommended.

Extra caution is also advised for all drivers Saturday when runners participating in the annual Ragnar event run from the Canadian Border through Skagit County and onto Whidbey Island, Petrich said.
