Health educator giving Nepal presentation March 2 in Coupeville

Coupeville United Methodist Church is inviting the community to learn about Nepal.

Katherine Parker will speak at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 2, about her work as a health and community transformation advisor with the United Mission to Nepal. A light lunch will be provided at 12:30, prior to Parker’s presentation.

Parker’s work in Nepal focused in three areas: adolescent empowerment; maternal and child health; and water, sanitation and hygiene.

Parker has been a United Methodist missionary since 2007, serving in Cambodia for five years before she started her work in Nepal in 2013.

She is currently engaged in a project with school- and church-based youth and mothers groups in three remote villages in western Nepal.

Parker is passionate about engaging groups in these communities in a process of identifying and linking values to action. For example, she works with youth, their parents and the schools to train youth to serve as Peer Educators.

The Youth Peer Educators take the lead in discussions about key social issues such as child marriage, hygiene and environmental sanitation, school attendance and rural economic development.

The lunch of homemade soups and bread is free and open to anyone in the community. The church would appreciate an approximate head count for lunch, so please contact the church office at 360-678-4256 if you plan to come for the lunch, and also if you would like to have babysitting available.

The church is located at the corner of North Main and 6th streets in Coupeville.
