Friends, family gather to celebrate 100th birthday

During her 100 years on earth, Coupeville resident Ardith Yost saw the Golden Gate Bridge built, went to Disneyland the first year it opened and traveled across much of the United States. Around 60 people gathered at Coupeville Town Park on Aug. 13 to celebrate her 100th trip around the sun.

Yost was born on Friday the 13th in 1918 in Central, Ariz. Both of her parents came from pioneer families and her grandfather was an Indian Scout at the Army’s Fort Apache. She worked as a nurse and has lived in California, New Mexico, Texas and moved to Whidbey Island in 2009 when her son Michael built a house in Coupeville.

In her retirement, she drove hundreds of miles working part time returning rental cars to their home lots. She volunteered in hospitals, helping care for newborn babies.

She lives with her son Michael and his wife and enjoys gardening in the backyard.

“She’s always been active,” he said.

Longevity seems to run in her family. He said her mother lived to be 106 and her father 97.

Though her favorite foods are Pepsi and Cheetos, her son said she’s a “picture of health.”

Yost attends the Oak Harbor’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and some of the church’s members held her birthday celebration at the park.
