Now that 2014 is here, it’s time to start making those resolutions a reality.

Fitness tops the charts when it comes to putting one’s best foot forward for the new year, and a new Oak Harbor business might help reach those goals.

Kyle Isaacson and Tyson Van Dam opened Rep Fitness on 3075 N. Oak Harbor Road Nov. 18.

The pair had been talking about opening their own place for about 1 1/2 years.

“This facility is great from a training stand point,” Van Dam said.

Because of their appointment-based system, they are able offer training without having to wait in line for equipment and a private atmosphere for clients.

“It’s more personal,” Isaacson said. “It’s an isolated situation where you can come in and work out.”

They are open from 4:30 a.m. to 6 or 7 p.m. by appointment.

Anyone is welcome to stop by, check out the place and set-up a meeting one-on-one, Van Dam said.

Van Dam said they are working with a couple other personal trainers and a physical therapist to use their space. They have the room to accommodate five trainers and their clients.

A space has also been set aside for children, with some toys and a couple televisions.

“The kids can come in and hang out,” Van Dam said.

The facility also has showers for clients to use if they are heading straight to work after exercising, Van Dam said.

Isaacson said they’ve been busy since they opened the facility.

The business also offers another aspect of fitness. They are looking to expand in the space adjacent to them for sports specific training in addition to their regular services. They will have turf and rubber surfaces for athletes to train on.

“I’ve always wanted to branch out and offer sport specific training,” Van Dam said.

With their background as collegiate athletes, complemented with their degrees in exercise physiology, it was a natural path for them to open a business with this focus, Van Dam said.

“Kids need to get bigger, faster and stronger, and there’s no facility for that,” Isaacson said.

Sports specific training requires a lot of explosive workouts. Athletes who want to train and become stronger and faster need to be doing Olympic lifts and plyometrics, Isaacson said.

Since the duo coaches the Oak Harbor High School baseball team, they’ve had the team in there to work out.

“That was the test,” Isaacson said. “To see how many baseball boys fit in here.”

They are also planning to offer a fitness boot camp the beginning for January.

With the new year, many people are looking to get back into shape, and Isaacson and Van Dam had a couple of suggestions to help people have success with their resolutions.

Van Dam suggested working out earlier in the day. Most of the time if people wait until the evening, they’ll put it off.

“Even if it’s just 30 minutes in the morning, it’s something you’re doing,” Van Dam said.

It also helps brain stimulation and  waking up, Isaacson said.

And if people feel obligated and make exercise a priority, they will have success, Isaacson said.
