En-deering video from Coupeville game goes viral

A football game in Coupeville last weekend made national news and spawned a viral video.

A blacktail deer ran down the middle of the field during the game against King’s High School, followed by Coupeville’s Sean Toomey-Stout as he returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown.

The crowd erupted.

A video of the unusual play, taken by BreAnna Boon, Coupeville Cheer coach, made regional newscasts and then circulated around the Internet and was posted on high-profile sites. It was played on ESPN.

Even Sports Illustrated covered the play.

“A high school football team in Washington state had an extra blocker on the field during a kickoff return last weekend,” the story says. “The game — between Coupeville High School and Kings High School — was played on Coupeville’s home field, in a town of fewer than 2,000 people located on an island in the Puget Sound. (The island has ‘lots and lots of deer,’ one person posted recently on a hunting message board.)”

Boon said she initially posted the video on her Facebook page, where it got 18,000 views.

Then USA Today put up the video with the comment, “We’re not sure which is better: the runaway deer or the 90+ yard touchdown.”

The video quickly garnered 300,000 views.

“It just kept going and going and going,” Boon said.

Unfortunately, Toomey-Stout’s spectacular play and a little help from the animal kingdom didn’t change the outcome.

Coupeville ended up losing the game 20-14.
