Island County Democrats’ and Republicans’ votes in Tuesday’s presidential primary were pretty similar to statewide results.
Democratic voters were more active than Republicans in the election, even though the results were meaningless when it comes to delegates in the Democratic Party. In Island County, 12,308 Democrats and 10,582 Republicans voted.
In the state, 769,000 Democrats participated in the election, as compared to 574,000 Republicans.

Just hours before press time, Gary Wray, a Coupeville Republican and business owner, filed against incumbent Helen Price Johnson, a Clinton Democrat representing District 1 — South and Central Whidbey.
There’s keen interest in the May 24 presidential primary election among Island County voters, even though the results are unlikely to affect the race.
No surprise local candidates appeared during Filing Week as of noon on Tuesday.
Helen Price Johnson will seek a third term as Island County District 1 commissioner.
