Coupeville receives county lodging tax funds

The Island County Board of Commissioners approved $220,000 in lodging tax funds county wide at their regular Monday meeting.

The lodging tax, a 2 percent charge on hotel rooms, is used for the promotion of county destinations and events.

The Coupeville Chamber of Commerce received $26,750, which it uses both for Coupeville’s promotion as well as running its visitors center.

Lynda Eccles, Coupeville’s chamber executive director, said the center sees more than 15,000 walk-ins a year.

“The allotment is a big part of the expenses for the visitors center,” Eccles said. “We could not run a visitors center without the county’s 2 percent funds.”

Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve received $10,000 to support a number of its programs, including the junior ranger youth program and visitor guide advertising.

The Island County Historical Society received $8,800 for promotion of its Coupeville museum and associated programs.

The Pacific Northwest Art School received $5,000 for catalog production, mailers and national advertising.

The Coupeville Historic Waterfront Association was awarded $3,000 to promote the 2015 Mussel Festival.
