Behind a hat trick by Shantel St. Jean, the Lakewood soccer team stopped host Coupeville 7-0 Thursday, Sept. 19.

Coupeville coach Troy Cowen said, “We just fundamentally broke down and were never mentally into the game. I take full responsibility for not having the girls mentally prepared and for not having them ready to play.”

He said the Wolves struggled with the Cougars’ (1-1, 1-3) pressure and were outplayed in the battle for 50/50 balls.

“I told the girls after the match I was proud of them, but we have to bring more energy to the pitch and we must win the effort battle,” Cowan said.

While the team as a whole did not play well, Micky LeVine played a strong match, according to Cowen.

“Micky played her heart out tonight and played with incredible touch and was consistently in the right spots on the field to make some very nice through balls,” he said.

“Our season is a long one,” Cowen said, “and we will continue to work, stay positive and look to improve every day.”

Coupeville (0-2, 0-3) play at South Whidbey (0-2, 0-3) at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24.
