Candidate filing week starts Monday

Island County residents considering a run for elected office need to make a decision pretty quickly.

May 15-19 is filing week, the five-day period during which anyone who wants to be on the November ballot must file; after the week, write-in candidacy is the only option.

There’s a number of important positions up for grabs this year.

Four of the seven positions on the Oak Harbor City Council will be on the ballot. Current council members Joel Servatius and Erica Wasinger plan on running. Danny Paggao and Jim Campbell, both longtime councilmen, announced earlier this year that they won’t run again.

In Coupeville, councilwomen Dianne Binder and Pat Powell are up for reelection. Binder said earlier that she hasn’t decided whether to seek reelection, while Powell said she will.

Three of the five seats on the WhidbeyHealth board will appear on the ballot. They include incumbent Grethe Cammermeyer’s seat, as well as two seats with appointees. Kurt Blankenship was appointed to the seat vacated by Georgia Gardner. Eric Anderson replaced Anne Tarrant.

Each seat represents a different area of Whidbey.

Two seats are available on the Oak Harbor School District board. Both Corey Johnson and Ana Maria Schlecht said they won’t throw their hats in this time.

Three seats are open on the Coupeville School District Board. Kathleen Anderson and Venessa Matros said they will seek reelection while Chris Chan said he will not.

Two of the three positions on the Port of Coupeville board will appear on the ballot. John Mishasek, who was appointed to the seat, said he plans on running. Bob Monroig, also an appointee, said earlier that he’s unsure.

In addition, three positions will be on the ballot for North Whidbey Park and Recreation District. Two positions on the North Whidbey Fire and Rescue board and one position on the Central Whidbey Fire board will be as well.

All candidate filings and applicable fees must be received in the Island County Elections Office no later than 4:30 p.m., May 19.

All candidate filing fees are nonrefundable. The office is located at 400 North Main St. in Coupeville. Online filing is at www.islandcountywa.gov/auditor/elections.

The Island County Elections Office is open during candidate filing week from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, May 15-19.

A computer is available in the elections office for candidates to use when filing for office. If a candidate needs assistance with filing, staff is available.

A lot draw will take place at 4:30 p.m., Friday, May 19, in the elections office to determine candidate order on the ballot. This process is open to all candidates, campaigns, political parties, party observers, media and members of the public.
