Box truck cripples Mukilteo ferry terminal, closes entire route

Service on the Clinton-to-Mukilteo ferry route was brought to a sudden halt Saturday morning after a large vehicle struck and damaged the Mukilteo Terminal.

Agency Spokesman Ian Sterling said the collision crippled the facility, and subsequently forced the closure of the entire route. It’s unclear when it will reopen.

“A box truck ran into the control panel that controls the apron and bridge (the car ramp) and sheared it completely off, so unfortunately we’re out of service on the route,” Sterling said.

The closure means there is currently no ferry service to Whidbey Island as the Coupeville-to-Port Townsend route is also closed this weekend for planned seismic upgrades to the Coupeville Terminal.

“This is kind of the worst case scenario for the island right now,” he said.

He apologized for the inconvenience and confirmed that crews are at the Mukilteo Terminal now working to fix the problem.
