Accused rapist may have his bail revoked for alleged witness tampering

An accused rapist may have his bail revoked after he allegedly tampered with a witness, court documents state.

Maurice Bandy, 49, of Freeland is accused of assaulting his 23-year-old girlfriend at a rural Oak Harbor home Feb. 2 because she was leaving him, a report by a detective with the Island County Sheriff’s Office states.

He struck her across the face with a piece of firewood and cut her arms with a knife, causing “substantial injuries,” a deputy’s report states.

He restrained her in handcuffs against her will and sexually assaulted her, the report states. The woman said Bandy took her phone from her so she used a tablet to contact her parents for help after he passed out; she said he also threatened to shoot her and she feared for her life, according to court documents.

She sustained a severe concussion, a sprained neck and cuts.

Prosecutors charged Bandy in Island County Superior Court Feb. 6 with attempted rape in the first degree and assault in the second degree with sexual motivation.

The crimes were charged as being domestic-violence related.

Bandy was released on bail Feb. 8, court documents state.

In a separate case, Bandy is accused of violating a no-contact order and witness tampering by allegedly asking a different former girlfriend to contact the victim for him; the woman messaged the victim and asked her to communicate with Bandy through a fake Facebook page, the detective’s report states.

In a phone call from the jail, Bandy told a relative that to “beat the charge” they would have to separate the victim from her parents, the report states.
