A 28-year-old Oak Harbor man accusing of stabbing a woman in the leg is being held on $200,000 bail.

Anthony Carty pleaded not guilty in Island County Superior Court May 19 to assault in the second degree with a deadly weapon and harassment — threats to kill.

Carty could face more than five years in prison if convicted of the charges.

The case was investigated by Lt. Evan Tingstad with the Island County Sheriff’s Office. He wrote in his report that a 27-year-old Freeland woman claimed that Carty, who was her boyfriend, assaulted her at her home May 5.

The woman said Carty had stayed overnight and she woke in the morning to find him pacing the bedroom. He was holding a knife and digital camera; he accused her of cheating on him and said he was “hearing things,” the report states.

The woman claimed Carty threatened to kill her with the knife and then stabbed her twice on the thigh, Tingstad wrote. She tried to escape, the report states, but Carty pushed her back onto the bed and punched her at least two times on the head and face.

At a hearing May 7, Island County Superior Court Judge Vickie Churchill set Carty’s bail at $200,000 and approved a domestic violence no-contact order that bars the defendant from coming within 500 feet of the alleged victim’s home or work.

In court May 19, Carty’s attorney requested that his client’s bail be reduced, but Judge Alan Hancock said no.
