The Island County prosecutor’s office is trying to bring back a registered sex offender who left the county without permission.
Charles Deffendoll, a 23-year-old man who’s supposed to be living in Oak Harbor, was charged in Island County Superior Court June 18 with a single felony count of failure to register as a sex offender.
Judge Vickie Churchill authorized a $50,000 warrant for Deffendoll’s arrest after he failed to appear at a June 28 hearing.
According to a report by Detective Laura Price with the Island County Sheriff’s Office, a detective in Oak Harbor alerted Price in May that an Oak Harbor woman had asked Deffendoll to leave her home. As a sex offender, he was required to register with the sheriff’s office and notify the office of any change in address.
Price tracked Deffendoll down in Tacoma, where he said he was living with a friend. The detective told him to register with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office within 24 hours, but he never did, the report states.
Deffendoll was convicted in a U.S. Navy court of carnal knowledge and sodomy, which equates to rape of a child in the third degree, Price wrote in her report.
Deffendoll is considered a low-risk, level 1 sex offender.
