A May visit by two popular tall ships to Penn Cove has been canceled.

The Lady Washington and the Hawaiian Chieftain were scheduled to visit Coupeville May 20 and 23, but plans had to change when it turned out the visit could interfere with the Penn Cove Water Festival, said Jim Patton, executive director for the Port of Coupeville.

The Penn Cove Water Festival takes place Saturday, May 22, throughout downtown Coupeville. The annual festival features tribes from around the Puget Sound region who compete in canoe races in Penn Cove. When the two tall ships visit, they engage in a mock battle in Penn Cove.

The boats will still visit Coupeville later. They are set to make their regular visit Aug. 13 through Aug. 16.
