One lane of Highway 20 at Deception Pass Bridge was closed Tuesday morning as a result of a one-car accident, causing lengthy backups in both directions.
A white Mitsubishi compact car was traveling north on Highway 20 when the driver got distracted by the beautiful scenery that surrounds the Deception Pass Bridge and veered off the roadway. The car collided with the cable posts that line the bridge, according State Patrol Trooper Larry Provoncha.
The car was pushed onto the shoulder just north of the bridge until a tow truck removed it. Workers were busy checking the cable barrier separating the roadway and sidewalk. The two workers also cordoned off part of the sidewalk where the car collided with the posts.
Provoncha said nobody was injured in the accident and the driver will be cited for "wheels off the roadway."
Only one lane of Highway 20 was opened while emergency crews investigated and cleared the accident, backing up traffic in both directions. Vehicles on the Whidbey side of Highway 20 were backed up as far as Lams Links.
