Teachers credited with test score hike
October 20, 2009 · 11:40 AM
The Oak Harbor School Board recognized four Olympic View Elementary School teachers Monday, for their work in improving standardized test scores.
Teachers Marilyn Hoffman, Janet Sodano, Shawn Sullivan and Brianna Thompson taught third graders last year, who as a grade level, scored very well on the 2009 Washington Assessment of Student Learning.
In mathematics, the percent of students meeting the WASL standard increased from 63 percent in 2008 to 72 percent in 2009.
The percentage in reading increased from last year’s 53 percent to 80 percent in 2009; a 27 point gain.
Martha Adams, Olympic View Elementary principal, credited the teachers’ use of whole and small group instruction for the new reading material, “StoryTown.”
“I truly believe their instructional skill with these new materials accounts for the increase,” Adams said.
