Weekend ride may cause Whidbey traffic congestion

Drivers should prepare for lots of bicyclists on the roads of Island, Skagit and Whatcom counties this weekend as the Bike MS Deception Pass Classic is Sept. 6-7, the state Department of Transportation announced Thursday.

Washington State Patrol and certified flaggers may perform traffic control as needed for up to 5 minutes at a time. Troopers will be stationed at the following locations:

— Saturday, Sept. 6 on Highway 20 at Reservation Road and at the Deception Pass and Canoe Pass bridge.

— Sunday, Sept. 7 on Highway 20 at Avon-Allen Road and on Highway 11 at Cook Road.

As part of the ride, on Saturday bicyclists will ride on Highway 20 between Deception Road near Pass Lake and Ault Field Road on Whidbey Island.

Bicyclists will be required to follow the rules of the road; holding up or stopping traffic is not permitted.
