Oak Harbor readies for the OHscars fund raiser
Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for its annual awards banquet later this month.
Keeping with last year’s popular theme, The OHscars, the evening will be focused on comedies.
Chamber Director Kathy Reed said last year’s theme was such a success, the chamber will continue the glitzy theme in years to come.
The event is 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at the Oak Harbor Elk’s Lodge.
Tickets are $50 and include dinner, drink and an evening of “surprises.”
The deadline is Feb. 25 and attendees have the option of sponsoring a table.
Reed said sponsorship requires decorating the table based upon a movie within the comedies theme.
Each table will also include giveaway prizes, and centerpieces will be raffled off at the end of the evening.
During the event the chamber will present its annual awards, which are voted on by the membership.
Some of the awards include customer service, service organization of the year, nonprofit organization of the year, employer of the year and business of the year.
The chamber also presents the Acorn Award, which is given to a person or organization that’s made a difference in the community, Reed said.
Past recipients have included Soroptimist for its Tree of Hope program and Home Depot for its Christmas Village.
The annual awards banquet also kicks off fundraising for the chamber’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display, Reed said.
During the event the chamber usually asks for sponsors to donate.
Reed said a grand sponsor has already stepped up, which will cover almost half of the cost. That sponsor will be announced during the banquet.
“It’s a huge contribution and we’re really pleased to be this far ahead,” she said, “but we still have $8,000 more to go.”
All proceeds from ticket sales go toward the chamber’s fireworks fundraising.
