Fatal crash may have involved alcohol

A 21-year-old, lifelong resident of Oak Harbor was killed Friday night in a one-car, rollover accident on North Whidbey.

The Washington State Patrol reported that the Matthew Rodgers died at the scene in what appeared to be an alcohol-related accident on Jones Road near Dike Road, just a short distance from his home.

According to the report, Rodgers was driving a 1990 Acura Integra westbound when he apparently lost control and left the roadway.

The car rolled over and ejected Rodgers, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt. The car came to rest on top of him.

The accident was reported at 9:36 p.m. The State Patrol listed the cause of the accident as “DUI,” with no further explanation.

Island County Coroner Robert Bishop said toxicology reports on Rodgers are pending, though he did not smell alcohol.

The son of Richard “Pete” and Dixie Rodgers, Sr., Matthew Rodgers was born at the Oak Harbor Naval Hospital. He was a 2002 graduate of Oak Harbor High School.
