Concerts on the Cove organizers in Coupeville are scurrying to fill a schedule gap created when the Northwest Navy Band suddenly canceled its appearance slated for Sunday, Sept. 7.

“They canceled last week,” said Bill Carboneau, a Concerts on the Cove board member, on Tuesday. “We’ve never had that problem in the past, the military bands have always been there.”

Chief Petty Officer Robert Watson, speaking Tuesday from the band’s base in Silverdale, expressed regret over the cancellation, caused by “a higher priority engagement.” He said the Navy Band never gives a firm commitment for a concert until 60 days prior, although promoters often advertise the concert months ahead of time. “We weren’t able to do that this time,” Watson said of the 60-day confirmation. “This doesn’t happen very often.”

Watson couldn’t reveal where the Northwest Navy Band will be playing Sept. 7. “I’m not at liberty to say,” he said. “But it’s very high profile.” He said the band would like to reschedule Coupeville some time in the future.

There will still be a Concert on the Cove Sept. 7 if another band can be found. Carboneau said several bands have been contacted but nothing is finalized yet. The catch is that, like the Navy Band, they have to perform for free because the budget is tapped out for this season.
