Order doughnuts, make Tots happy

Krispy Kreme doughnuts are coming to Oak Harbor for one day only on Thursday, Dec. 13. Navy Federal Credit Union employees will be transporting the doughnuts from Issaquah to Whidbey Island.

The newly-opened Issaquah bakery has donated the delicious puffs of pastry to the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program. Navy Federal Credit Union is taking orders and taking care of delivery; each dozen costs $10. Branch manager Vickie Archer said she asked the local chamber of commerce for a fair market price. While that may seem expensive for just doughnuts, the proceeds will stay in the community and give needy kids Christmas presents.

Archer says, “We’ve worked with the Marine Corps for three years and asked them what they need. If we give them a check it will go to (Washington), D.C. Then the money filters back to the area but after Christmas is over. We have an account set up for Toys for Tots here. Our employees break down into teams and shop for each age group. That way no age group is forgotten.”

Last year Archer said the local credit union branch bought close to 500 toys with the $1,900 the branch raised. Normally, the branch sets a goal. “This year is different, since everyone has been so gracious since Sept. 11,” Archer said. “We would at least like to meet that. But we’re so happy to still be able to do Toys for Tots, any amount will be a success.”

Archer credited her new assistant for the Krispy Kreme idea. “She said it had worked in Washington, D.C. so I contacted the company.”

Navy Federal started taking orders Nov. 26; as of Dec. 4, 119 dozen doughnuts had been ordered. Originally Archer placed an order for 200 dozen; she’ll adjust that number by close of business Friday if she needs to.

Archer says anyone may place orders; membership in Navy Federal Credit Union is not required.

So how will 200 dozen doughnuts make the trip? In a U-Haul donated by Diamond Rentals with “plenty of clean, fresh blankets” also donated by Diamond Rentals Archer says.

Staff from Oak Harbor will leave about 1:30 a.m., Dec. 13 for Issaquah. They are scheduled to pick up the doughnuts between 4 and 5 a.m. While Archer says she doesn’t know exactly how long the trip will take, “We hope they’re back by about 8:30 a.m.” And then the sugar binge begins.

To place an order call 240-0996 or go to Navy Federal, 275 SE Cabot Dr., Oak Harbor.
