Man charged in police chase

"A 34-year-old Oak Harbor man who led police on a chase through residential areas of southwest Oak Harbor neighborhoods is facing a felony charge in Island County Superior Court.Marvin Franklin was charged June 22 with attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle. The standard range for the offense is between zero to 60 days in jail.According to the offense report, Oak Harbor Police Officer Patrick Horn tried to stop Franklin's car on SW Third Avenue early in the morning of June 20 because it matched the description of a car that fled from an officer earlier.But after Horn turned on his overhead lights, the car accelerated away from him on SW Dyer Street. Horn wrote that he turned on his sirens and followed the car as it drove erratically through SW neighborhoods. The car ran several stop signs, drove on shoulders and over the centerline, and even went through a yard in the mostly residential area, according to Horn.Horn wrote that he tried to stop the car by hitting the left quarter panel to spin and disable the car, but Franklin was able to regain control.Eventually Police Sgt. John Dyer forced the car off the road at a vacant lot and the officers arrested Franklin at gunpoint.According to Horn's report, Franklin said he tried to elude the officers because his license was suspended."
