Admiral's Cove turn lane project moved up

"Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island, scored points with residents of the Admiral’s Cove neighborhood this week. Haugen told the residents that new street lighting and a new left turn lane at the intersection of Highway 525 and Admiral’s Drive in Central Whidbey will arrive sooner than previously scheduled. During a tour of the island’s worst highway trouble spots last week, Haugen heard from area residents that work done by the Department of Transportation last year had actually made the turnoff into their neighborhood more dangerous because lighting had been removed and a much-needed northbound turn lane was never added.Since the tour, the department has moved the turn lane project from position 220 on their project list to position 11. It is now expected to be added next summer instead of in 2003. The department has also agreed to install temporary highway lighting at the intersection this summer and permanent lighting after the turn lane is added.“We’re very appreciative,” said Admiral’s Cove resident Lynn Sterns. “(Haugen’s) presence and awareness was an important part of this.”Haugen’s influence as chair of the Senate Transportation Committee may have played a major role in the Department of Transportation’s decision, but she said it was the area’s neighbors who made it happen.“We were successful because of the people who came out to inform DOT just how dangerous Admiral Drive is,” she said."
