Councilman bounding back from cancer

"Rex Hankins is once again walking a mile and a half a day. He said he's back to his mean old self and is ready to get back to agitating on the Oak Harbor City Council. The councilman was diagnosed with lung cancer in December and missed two council meetings while he completed 28 days of radiation treatment at Providence Medical Center in Everett. It's good to be back, he said. We're going to get a lot done.Hankins said that doctors discovered cancerous nodule in his lung after he had a chest X-ray last December. Surgeons removed the upper left lobe of his lung.Man, you should see the scar, he said. They really did a number on me.After undergoing daily doses of radiation for four weeks, Hankins is back in town and resuming his famous daily walks all over town. Hankins said he got to be known as a bit of an agitator when former Mayor Steve Dernbach was in office. He was a vocal opponent of many of Dernbach's policies, especially those involving growth and planning. But Hankins said he supports Cohen - at least so far - and believes she can bring about compromise. While he was gone, the City Council unanimously voted to excuse his absense from the meetings. I'll make up for it, he said."
