Aberdeen man back in prison on meth charges

A 36-year-old former Oak Harbor resident with a history of committing methamphetamine-related crimes is back in prison.
Kevin Wais of Aberdeen pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court June 16 to possession of meth.
Judge Vickie Churchill agreed with the sentence recommendation worked out by the prosecution and defense as part of a plea bargain. She sentenced Wais to one year and one day in prison.
The sentence was lengthy largely because of Wais criminal record. He was convicted of seven drug-related crimes in Island and Skagit counties from 1998 to 2006. About five years ago, Judge Alan Hancock sentenced him to just over five years in prison for intent to manufacture meth and possession of a stolen firearm.
In that case, Wais was caught running a meth lab out of a mini-storage unit in Oak Harbor after a tank started leaking ammonia.
In the recent case, Island County Deputy Rick Norrie pulled over a suspected impaired driver on SW Ninth Street in Oak Harbor Jan. 5. It turned out that Wais was driving a borrowed car and one of the passengers was wanted on numerous misdemeanor warrants.
Norrie searched the car and found a container with a white substance inside. The state crime lab found that it was 1.89 grams of meth.
