Keep clam this summer
July 3, 2008 · Updated 10:52 AM
Join Beach Watcher Eugene Thrasher this summer to learn the correct way to dig clams. This year he will be leading groups on two beaches, West Penn Cove and Double Bluff.
Come with a clamming license and bring a shoveling tool and one bucket per digger. Trenching shovels work best. Hand trowels are not recommended. Schedule: June 7, Penn Cove, 12 noon; June 21, Double Bluff, 11:30 a.m.; July 3, Penn Cove, 10 a.m.; July 5, Double Bluff, 11 a.m.; July 19, Penn Cove, 10:30 a.m.; July 31, Double Bluff, 9 a.m.; Aug. 2, Penn Cove, 10 a.m.; Aug. 16, Double Bluff 9 a.m.
Double Bluff Beach is south of Freeland, accessible from the highway by Double Bluff Road. West Penn Cove is at Zylstra Road and Highway 20.
